For those of you unfamiliar with Firefly, shame on you, go watch it right now, it's on Netflix. :|b
That said, River is a reader, meaning she can read people's emotions and thoughts, look into their pasts and sometimes glean a bit of their future, if only through observing a set of conditions and predicting the most probable outcome. In a sense, she's a telepath; only in River's instance, she has virtually no control over it.
What does this mean for you?
Not much, yay! Bless the power nerfing in Asgard. But growing up with this ability has shaped River in drastic and traumatising ways, and I want people to be aware beforehand of what they're getting into when they interact with her.
River is not a mentally or emotionally stable character. Her powers being out of her control are largely the result of two years of unwilling experimentation and conditioning that has left her scarred and broken. She's seventeen years old with the mentality of a child, no control over her emotions, and she fades in and out of coherency while remembering other people's lives. She can go from calm and pleasant in one second to completely inconsolable and deranged the next ( though I will try to give some advanced warning if she's going to be in a delicate state ). Her narrative may come with warnings for abandonment, child abuse / neglect, mutilation, and murder.
Also to note: Firefly's universe is set in the future where the United States and China have long since merged into one superpower known as the Alliance, and subsequently, nearly every person in their time period knows English and Chinese. I, however, barely have a grasp on the first, which means I'm going to be using a ton of Google Translate for the latter. I apologise beforehand for any and all butchered Chinese.
I'm gonna try to refrain from using too much of it for this exact purpose, but if it does ever slip out, it's just going to be a mangled mess of "this miiiight make sense in some distant universe." I'm so sorry for my excistence.
